There’s some crazy stuff going on these days in the wide, wide world of sports. And, you guessed it, I’ve got some thoughts on it. This is the part where you decide if it’s worth reading.
Injury Bug
All across the NFL, players are dropping like flies from all sorts of injuries. Tampa Bay lost Cadillac Williams to a potentially career threatening injury last week. They turn around this week and watch their backup running back go down for 6-8 weeks with an ankle injury. Miami got the chance to watch their starting QB get knocked out (getting a grade 3 concussion, the worst kind) after going for a low block. This after he was knocked out for over a month last year with a less serious concussion last year. And this wasn’t just limited to the Florida teams. Denver lost their starting center for the whole year, Carolina’s going to be without Jake Delhomme for the remainder of the season (I told you Carr would be the full time starter by week 7), Matt Leinart won’t see the field for about 6 weeks, the Aints lost Deuce for the year, and Cincy didn’t even get Kenny Irons into the regular season before he was shelved.
This is just the beginning of a long list of injuries that teams all over the country are having to deal with. I love watching the NFL because of the parity, anyone can win against anybody at any time (unless they’re playing the Patriots this year), but with all these injuries to key players, that’s shaking up the NFL landscape even more. It’s sad when I start wondering which big name will go down next rather than when will these injuries end.
Upset City
Yeah, I just quoted Dicky V… now move on. NCAA football this year is complete madness. From the beginning of the year when Appalachian State beat Michigan in the Big House all the way through until this past weekend when Stanford was able to sneak by USC at the Coliseum. 2 weeks ago, the Big XII watched their standings get turned upside down when Colorado came from behind against Oklahoma and Kansas State took out Texas in their backyard. The rest of the year should really be fun to watch, and I’m gonna be the guy always rooting for the underdog.
Bye Bye, Bronx Bombers
First thing, I hate the Yankees. So I’m really loving that they are 1 game from going home for the offseason. And now word is out that the Boss is putting Torre’s job on the line. In other words, if they don’t win the Series… he’s gone. He also thinks they’ll get A-Rod back this summer, but I’m expecting him to jump over to the NL and join those lovable losers in Chi-town. And what happened to those Cubs anyway? After putting together a pretty respectable regular season, they simply collapsed in the playoffs and got swept by the D-Backs. The Rockies, on the other hand, forgot what it meant to lose a game. They’ve won something like 17 of their last 18 games, and they needed all of those just to make it into the playoffs.
