T.W.I.S.T. for Aug1-7

I’ve had a crazy week this week, so I didn’t have time to bring you links for most of these stories, and I apologize for that. But the last thing I wanted to do was miss a week, so here’s your biggest sports stories of the week, from my point of view.

News broke this week about Brett Favre contacting his coaches and teammates via text saying that he was calling it quits. Then Brett Favre said he was ‘undecided, but would probably play as long as his ankle holds up’ the next day. Seriously, who really gives a crap anymore.  And honestly, the Vikings passed on some quality rookie QBs in the draft just to make sure they didn’t upset the almighty Favre, he then turns around and ‘retires’ after the calendar has already turned to August? I’m so sick of this guy. Let’s just wait until the Vikings line up on offense in the first game of the year and see if Favre is under center. Quit giving this diva the attention he so desperately seems to crave.

The rest after the break.

So Albert Haynesworth signed the biggest contract any DT has ever signed in the history of the NFL last off season. His team then underwent some changes in it’s coaching staff (which brought a change from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense) and now Fat Albert is holding out because ‘management promised they’d use him a certain way, and that’s now what was going to happen now’. Dude, when coaches change, those old promises by management go out the door with them. Now that he’s trying to practice with his team again, his new coach is making him pass a conditioning test. He failed twice and then miraculously had a knee injury and couldn’t do it for almost a week. Mike Golic, from the ESPN radio show Mike and Mike in the Morning, last played in the league 16 years ago, and he passed the test on his first try.  Here’s the article with video courtesy of TVSquad.com. (Fat Albert finally passed the test yesterday.)

Shaq signed a 2 year contract with the Celtics. So I guess the ‘Big 3’ in Boston becomes the ‘Old 4’? Maybe Metamucil can sponsor this team. He will add much needed depth and size to their roster though.

A-Rod hit his 600th home run to become the youngest player to ever reach that mark… wait, what’s the sound? Oh yeah, that’s the sound of nobody caring. I read a quote on Twitter about how someone was ‘proud of A-Rod, he hit his 341st legitimate homer today.’ That about nails it. Too bad Ken Griffey Jr couldn’t set the record, I really think he and Frank Thomas were the only 2 doing it the right way during the steroid era. Well, maybe Albert Pujols… but the vote is still out on him.

Jon Jones made a bit leap in his career last Sunday destroying Vladimir Matyushenko in the first round at UFC Live 2. You can see our coverage of that card prior to and after the fights. Anderson Silva also shut up Chael Sonnen on Saturday at UFC 117… barely. I talked a bit about how annoying Sonnen had gotten prior to the fight, and Silva was able to pull off the win with a triangle choke in the closing minutes after being dominated for the entire fight.

And last but not least, Tyson Gay upset the ‘Fastest Man Alive’ Usain Bolt, Gay beat the Jamaican at the DN Galan meet in 9.84 seconds at the same stadium where Bolt last lost a race two years ago. Tyson Gay, looking comfortable, drew away while Bolt strained to keep up and finished second in 9.97.

That’s about it, we’ve got the Hall of Fame game today in the NFL, which means we will have football every weekend now for at least the next 5 months. Yay!
