  • Hijinks Reviews: Fring

    Pros:
Hands down one of the best apps for the iPhone. Period. First to bring native Skype support for Wi-Fi calling. Replaces the need for running three or four chat apps.
Cons: Leaving it running in the background does shorten battery life. Doesn’t play nice with your tunes.

    Platform: iPod Touch and iPhone

I was fairly impressed with iChabber, which was the first app to bring working GoogleTalk support to the platform, but I have to say Fring makes iChabber look like a toy. Both in terms of ease of use and available features.

  • Top Ten iPhone Apps

As my fellow blogger Fred has recently pointed out, we have a new reviews section and rating system for mobile applications for the iPhone/iPod touch. In honor of that, I decided I’d post a quick top ten list of the best apps in my opinion for the iPhone (this list only includes apps that I currently have installed).

    1. Installer.app – I know it’s a cop out, but without it installing apps is rather frustrating.
    2. Fring – Support for VoIP, GoogleTalk, Twitter, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and ICQ.
    3. Touchpad – Awesome app for controlling your computer from across the room.
    4. iPhysics – Countless hours of fun
    5. Tris – The most polished version of Tetris available for the iPhone.
    6. MxTube – Easy to use application for downloading and saving YouTube videos.
    7. NES – Super Mario Bros on the iPhone, ’nuff said.
    8. Millionaire – Without Regis Philbin it’s a much better game.
    9. Pool – Excellent use of the touch screen for controls.
    10. AFPd – Makes copying files to and from your iPhone a breeze (assuming you’re on a Mac).

What’s your top ten list of apps look like?

  • Hijinks Inc. – iPhone Edition

I’m pleased to announce that as of today, Hijinks Inc. has a mobile version of our site online. No need to visit a special URL either, just open up http://hijinksinc.com on your iPhone or iPod touch and it will automatically load the mobile version of Hijinks.

Currently 15% of our hits are coming from Mobile Safari, so we figured it was about time to make browsing a little easier.

  • Hijinks Reviews: iDope. The Police is too strong for you!

Pros: The weird looks your friends give you when you talk about what you’re doing in the game without telling them its just a game.
Cons: Buggy interface and no re-playability. Nothing cool to buy with our ill-begotten gains.

    Platform: iPod Touch and iPhone

iDope is a port of the classic turn based strategy game, Dope Wars. Originally a high school project, in 1984 John Dell created a DOS based buying and selling stimulater based on drug trading. Almost twenty-five years later his concept has seen countless reiterations (including the wildly popular Facebook application–wildly popular because I swear I get ten invites for it every time I log on.) the latest of which comes to the iPod Touch and iPhone. • Improve Google Maps on the iPod touch/iPhone

This mostly applies to the iPod touch seeing as the iPhone also has cell towers to rely on, but apparently Skyhook has setup a page for users to submit their access points. No word on how quickly they’re added to the database, or if they even actually make it in, but it at least makes me feel like I’m contributing.

You will need the MAC address for your router in order to complete the submission.

[ Submit your AP to Skyhook ]

I live in the middle of no where, which currently yields “Your location could not be determined” on both my iPhone and iPod touch, so I’ll let you know if Skyhook ever adds my AP to their database.
