  • Replacement Computer Ordered

Over the weekend the insurance paperwork finally cleared, so I went ahead and ordered a replacement computer. I got a little less from the insurance company than I expected, so instead of a new MacBook Pro I went with the new aluminum MacBook to save a bit of money.

The processor (2.4GHz) is the same core speed as my MacBook Pro was, and even though the graphics memory is shared I think I’ll be able to survive, since it is a newer graphics chipset. Oh, and I did purchase a 4GB RAM upgrade for it (obviously not from Apple), so that should further help to even the playing field.

I think I still have a copy of my GeekBench scores for my MacBook Pro, so we’ll see how the new MacBook stacks up in comparison.

Plus, the way I see it, getting the MacBook with its smaller screen gives me an excuse to buy a nice big monitor down the road!

  • Repairing Your Grub Bootloader

Last week a friend of mind tried to install Windows XP on his system after installing Ubuntu, and of course the result was that he lost his bootloader.

Don’t panic though, just boot off your Live CD and open up a Terminal window.

    Then execute these commands:

    sudo grub

    root (hd0,0)

    setup (hd0)

Close out the Terminal and reboot, and you’re good to go! Just don’t forget to eject your Live CD. This should apply to any Linux distro that uses the Grub bootloader.

  • Passive Income – October 2008

October started out on a good note, but ended with my laptop getting stolen. So replacing my laptop might have a bit of an impact on November’s passive income.

    • Credit Card Rewards: $143.30
    • AdSense: $11.70

Netting a sweet $275.62 for the month.

  • Coming soon to a blog near you!

It’s no secret that my fellow bloggers and I have had problems posting on a regular basis, in fact, Dave hasn’t posted since May 18th, 2008. Yeah…

Anyhow, for the month of November we’re aiming to knock out at least one blog post a day, and yes, in case you’re wondering, this post does count as our one post for the day. We’re off to a great start!

Oh, and if anyone still reads this blog, we’d certainly like to hear from you, and suggestions for future topics will be rewarded with free PEZ.

  • Alexa Rank

Alexa has a very skewed way of ranking websites, it bases your sites rank off of the number of hits from people who have the Alexa Toolbar installed. Lame!

It has been suggested though, that adding one of Alexa’s widgets to your site might improve your rank, as it supposedly allows Alexa to register visits based off the number of times the widget has been loaded by unique IPs as well as those visits from users with the Alexa Toolbar installed.

In order to test this out, I’m going to add a traffic rank widget to Hijinks, which currently has a rank of 1,698,556. And at the end of the week, we’ll see if our rank actually increases.
