  • E*Trade is raising their rates!

I just received an email from E*Trade, informing me that starting tomorrow they will be raising the interest rate on their Complete Savings accounts from 3.01% to 3.15%! Not a huge jump, but when you consider that the Fed just cut interest rates by 0.25% last week and most banks lower their interest rates when that happens, this is definitely good news.

Just thought I’d share the news.

  • Things that make all other things like it seem crappy: Part I

    Rockport Turntable

This is Part I of a series I will post every so often showcasing products that your average person wouldn’t be able to afford, mainly electronics. I had the idea because I enjoy reading about such products, even though there isn’t the slightest chance of ever owning any of them.

The Rockford Technologies System III Sirius Turntable definitely belongs on the list, unless you could argue that $73,750 is a reasonable price for a turntable…

According to Forbes.com, the system weighs in at 535 pounds, not including the 50 pound air compressor “that is required to power the pneumatic suspension and which floats the plinth (the chassis of the turntable) on a cushion of air to eliminate the nasty effect of vibration.”

From doing a search, I found that there’s actually at least one other turntable out there that’s more expensive… The Goldmund Reference II . This one has more visual appeal and weighs in at $300,000. It is quoted on bornrich.org as being the world’s most expensive. Check out more pictures after the jump.

They’re selling a limited edition of 25 based on subscription, with a production of only 5 per year, so you better get your name on the list now if you want one.

  • Windows XP SP3 hits Windows Update

It’s no secret that you could’ve grabbed a copy of SP3 off Microsoft’s server anytime in the last three months with nothing more than a simple registry hack (although up until this last week it wouldn’t have been a final release).

Gone however are the days of registry hacks, as Microsoft has released SP3 into the wild via Windows Update. As far as updates go, this one is pretty unexciting. Though I did notice a small boost in performance on most of the computers I installed it on.

This will certainly come in handy for anyone who builds/programs PCs, as now you don’t have to download 94 critical updates each time you install a fresh copy of XP, instead you can grab all those updates crammed into one download, copy it to a flash drive and save yourself a few hours work.

  • Hijinks Inc. Repo added to iAppCat

I stumbled across a listing for our repo on iAppCat.com, apparently we’re doing something right.

  • Excuse me while I..whip this (Wii) out..

    [Insert screams here.]

I’ve never been much of a console gamer. The last console I owned was a Playstation, and I bought that a good three years after the PS2 came out. Before that I had owned an original NES, a Super NES, and an Nintendo 64 (all bought at least five years after they came out of course). Amazingly enough I’ve never considered myself a Nintendo fan until I just typed that out. My, the things we discover about ourselves.
Self-discovery aside, last weekend I decided to cash in my PSP and library of PSP games (farewell Crisis Core!) to get a Wii. Suffice to say I’ve been late to the video game party all my life, but after this latest purchase I feel like I’m up to date (only two years late! Yes!). I finally own a current system. The joy! The glee! The expensive games! Admittedly I bought it mostly for Smash Bros and Wii Sports, but the fact that Guitar Hero 3 and Mario Galaxy were bundled with the system I bought was not..unpleasurable.
The Wii isn’t a console for the hardcore gamer. Granted, it doesn’t need to be. After selling out for almost two years straight, the idea that the Wii is just a “fad” or a “trend” is less a theory and now more of a fanciful dream. Now that Nintendo has ironed out most of the kinks, the Wii is ensconced as the quintessential party system.

Did I mention I bought it so I could bring it to parties and play with my girlfriend? Whoops, I think I just fell into a large demographic.
