  • Mobile Browser Shootout

Everyone is entitled to their own favorite smartphone, but I think we all can agree that some phones just do certain things better. Today, let’s take a quick look at how various mobile browsers fair in the Acid3 test.

    Default browsers for the platforms:

    Android 2.2

    93/100
No screenshot, because I haven’t rooted my Droid X yet. I know, I know, I fail at life…

    webOS 1.4.2

    webOS 2.0 (developer beta)

Wait… the performance of the browser actually went down with a new build of the OS?

  • Froyo OTA Update for Droid X Brick Your Phone? Try this.

Froyo OTA Update for Droid X Brick Your Phone? Try this.

Don’t worry, it probably didn’t actually brick it.

The very first day I had my Droid X I decide to download the OTA update to Android 2.2, the download was quick and painless, install seemed to go fine, at least until my Droid X restarted and seemingly got stuck on the Motorola logo screen.

Interestingly enough, if I moved my finger across the screen where the unlock button should be, the phone would vibrate. It would even ring if you called it, but it still only displayed the giant Motorola M.

Two things you can try to fix this. First:

    • Take off the back cover
    • Remove the battery
    • Also remove the SD card
    • Put the battery back in and restart the phone, leaving the SD card out

For me at least it booted fine, then I shut down, reinstalled the SD card and restarted again. All was back to normal.

If that fails and the unit still won’t boot past the M, remove and promptly reinstall the battery.

    • Hold both the Home and Power button until you see the little Android / warning triangle.
    • Press the Search key
    • Using the Volume keys (up/down) highlight Factory Data Reset. Press the Camera button to select it.
    • Tap Yes – delete all user data; then OK.
    • After 1-2 minutes the process should finish. Double check that “reboot system now” is highlighted, then tap OK.

  • Download Android 2.2 for your Droid X

Motorola has been sending takedown notices to numerous sites hosting the Froyo update for its Droid X handset, and that’s just sad. Especially when the folks at MyDroidWorld have put together a steller walkthrough on how to install Froyo on your Droid X, but their download links keep getting shut down.

We here at Hijinks figure we’re a small enough website that we’ll go largely unnoticed if say, a file name “update.zip” were to appear in the downloads directory on our site. So enjoy Droid X users!

  • Get the Official Android 2.2 Update for the Motorola Droid!

Good news for the Motorola Droid users out there!  The official file for the Android 2.2 (FroYo) update has been located on Google’s servers by one of the early receivers.  This means you don’t have to wait for the file to be pushed to your device – you can download it and install it now!

This is the official file directly from Google’s servers and is the exact file being pushed out to phones.  The install process is pretty easy and is outlined after the break. (more…)

  • What You Need to Know About FroYo

Android 2.2The talk in the Android world right now is about Android 2.2, codenamed FroYo.  FroYo will build on the improvements made in the last major release, Éclair by increasing speed and adding some great new features.  More on that in a bit.

Google has been releasing builds to Nexus One owners already, but as for the rest of us, we’re still waiting for phone manufacturers to build their versions and release the official builds for our phones.  The source code was released a few weeks ago, so we should start seeing releases by the end of the month.  There are rumors that the release for the Motorola Droid will be coming as soon as mid-July.  The Droid should be one of the first phones to receive the update as it doesn’t require any major changes to the interface.  In contrast, HTC has said that they will have FroYo released to all of their latest phones by Christmas, so you Sense users have some waiting to do.
