Get the Official Android 2.2 Update for the Motorola Droid!

Good news for the Motorola Droid users out there!  The official file for the Android 2.2 (FroYo) update has been located on Google’s servers by one of the early receivers.  This means you don’t have to wait for the file to be pushed to your device – you can download it and install it now!

This is the official file directly from Google’s servers and is the exact file being pushed out to phones.  The install process is pretty easy and is outlined after the break.

1. Download this file to your phone: Official Google Link
2. Place the file in the root of your SD card (not in any folders).
3. Using a file manager program (like Astro), rename the file to “update.zip” (no quotes).  Make sure it is not named update.zip.zip (make sure to show file extensions in the file manager so you can see that its named correctly.
4. Turn your phone off (hold down the power button and select Power Off).
5. Slide open the keyboard and hold down the X key while powering on the phone.  Continue to hold down the X key until you see a triangle with an exclamation point on your screen.
6. Hold the volume up botton then press the camera button.  This will enter the recovery screen.  You can try pressing the buttons simultaneously if you can’t get it to go.
7. Using the D-pad on your keyboard, select “apply update.zip” and hit the center button on the D-pad.
8. Your phone will now update.
9. After it completes, use the D-pad to select “reboot phone.”
10. You’ll now have Android 2.2!

The update will take 5-10 minutes, and don’t be concerned if the boot-up takes longer after the update.  It can take a few minutes for it to finalize all the updates on the first boot.  It will boot up at normal speed after the first boot.
