  • Meet Walter

This is Walter 2.0, my latest Lego creation. He stands 16.25″ high, and is 10″ wide at his shoulders.

I built the first version last Christmas when my cousins were visiting, I have since found a few minutes to refine the design. The biggest thing I’ve changed is I’ve added a central nervous system 😉

    Walter the Legoman

What makes Walter so special, aside from the fact he can scare small children? Well for that you’ll have check out the video after the jump…

  • 1.1.5 Firmware Coming Soon?

Word on the street is that Apple may be preparing to release version 1.1.5 of the iPhone/iPod touch firmware, no word on an exact time frame, however, some time in the next few weeks seems likely.

  • Apple Mail-In Repair

I mailed my iPhone in for repair a couple weeks ago and the response time was fantastic, four days from start to finish and I had my phone back. On March 28th, I sent my Macbook Pro in for repairs. I’d taken it to the Apple Store in Omaha and they said they couldn’t replace my screen in store because they didn’t have the part on hand, and it would take about three weeks if they ordered the part, but if I sent it in things would go much faster as the repair depot had the part on hand.

So, on their advice I sent my computer in, I was assured that I would have it back by next Friday at the latest (4/4/08). Monday (3/31/08) the status was listed as “Repair in progress” for a grand total of about three hours, after which it was listed as “On hold – Part on order”… Now wait a minute, I thought the whole idea for sending it in was that they had the part on hand! Oh well, as long as I get my computer back by Friday.

Well, as of the time I finished writing this (10am on 4/3/08) the status has not changed. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but if the repair isn’t finished today I highly doubt my computer will arrive by Friday as promised.

  • Firefox 3 Beta 5 Released

The latest version of the Firefox 3 Beta was just released today, head over to their download page to grab a copy.

Edit: After running it for the last few hours, I think I can safely say this version is a solid improvement over the last build. Although memory usage seems to have increased slightly over the previous build.

  • Windows XP Won’t Recognize CD Drive

Recently someone approached me with a question about their CD drive, basically Windows XP wasn’t recognizing it, it would only show up in the device manager with the following error message…

The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).

Uninstalling and reinstalling the drive yields the same result. I finally managed to track it down to a leftover registry value from when they’d removed some disc burning software.

You might give the following steps a try if you’re having similar difficulties.

    Step 1:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

    Step 2:
In the Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    Expand SYSTEM, then expand CurrentControlSet.
    Expand Control, then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the right hand pane, select UpperFilters.
With the UpperFilters entry selected, press the delete button on your keyboard
It will ask you “Are you sure you want to delete this value?”, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the registry entry.

    Step 3:
In the right hand pane, select LowerFilters.
With the LowerFilters entry selected, press the delete button on your keyboard
It will ask you “Are you sure you want to delete this value?”, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the registry entry.

Exit the Registry Editor and reboot.

Following these steps may result in your current burning software no longer working, to fix this just reinstall it. If you use the built in Windows burning utility, just uninstall and reinstall the CD drive from the device manager.
