  • Usenet Newsreader for OS X

    Someone recently asked me if I knew of a free Usenet newsreader for Mac OS X, I do in fact. Pineapple News 0.9, it’s free and lightweight. Check it out if you’re in need of one.

    Pineapple News is a USENET newsreader for Mac OS X. It is primarily an offline reader, but it has features and user interface conventions that make it easy to use online also. As you can see, it uses the traditional three-pane paradigm. Pineapple News can decode binary attachments in several formats: yenc, uuencode, MIME base64, and MIME inline. If an attachment is spread across two or more message files, it will automatically search through all downloaded messages in the current newsgroup, find the necessary parts, and stitch them back together. Currently, the program can’t deal with RARs, PARs, or NZB files, but I’ll likely add support for them, if there is enough interest.

  • Apple Repair – The Apple Store

    Even if Apple contracts out to idiots who destroy your computer and hires customer service reps who tell you to bug off, they do end up making up for it. Eventually.

    I went to the Apple Store yesterday and with almost no hassle at all they replaced the battery right then and there, they also ordered all the replacement parts they’ll need to get my Macbook Pro back up to snuff. Those should be in tomorrow, then I’ll only have to go 24-48 hours without my computer while they repair it.

    Sweet.

  • Hijinks Inc. – iPhone Edition

    I’m pleased to announce that as of today, Hijinks Inc. has a mobile version of our site online. No need to visit a special URL either, just open up http://hijinksinc.com on your iPhone or iPod touch and it will automatically load the mobile version of Hijinks.

    Currently 15% of our hits are coming from Mobile Safari, so we figured it was about time to make browsing a little easier.

  • Blockbuster Hearts Circuit City

    In a move that no one expected, or can even understand, Blockbuster has offered a cash buyout of Circuit City… Wait… What?!

    Zac Bissonnette of BloggingStocks puts it quite well:

    This deal would be the absolute epitome of “two drunken sailors trying to hold each other up.” Both of these companies have experienced precipitous declines in recent years, reporting losses as industry changes and more nimble competitors take their market share.

    Blockbuster is said to be offering a cash buyout between $6 and $8 a share. Shares of Circuit City are currently up 28.46%, or $1.11 to $5.01. Shares in Blockbuster are down 13.74%, or $0.43 to $2.70

    Now I don’t mind Blockbuster, but I hate Circuit City.

    In other news, Google announced its plans to acquire Payless Shoes, citing the pivotal shift in market strategy Blockbuster is forging with its attempted acquisition of Circuit City as the driving factor behind the deal.

  • Hijinks Reviews: iDope. The Police is too strong for you!

    Pros: The weird looks your friends give you when you talk about what you’re doing in the game without telling them its just a game.
    Cons: Buggy interface and no re-playability. Nothing cool to buy with our ill-begotten gains.

    iDope is a port of the classic turn based strategy game, Dope Wars. Originally a high school project, in 1984 John Dell created a DOS based buying and selling stimulater based on drug trading. Almost twenty-five years later his concept has seen countless reiterations (including the wildly popular Facebook application–wildly popular because I swear I get ten invites for it every time I log on.) the latest of which comes to the iPod Touch and iPhone.
