  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: She’s Out Of My League

Confession time, well, 2 things really. One, I rented She’s Out Of My League because Alice Eve is looks really good on the cover. Two, I have a very honest relationship with my wife, and I love it. While watching the movie, after the first few scenes Alice Eve was in, my wife turned to me and said, “She’s really cute! Is she on your list?” More on that list later.

I didn’t really intend to watch this movie until a friend of mine told me how much he enjoyed it. This particular friend is very conservative in his movie watching and it surprised me that he’d chosen this movie to watch… I’d written it off as just another raunch-fest that so many teen/college age movies seem to be these days. So when I sat down to watch She’s Out Of My League, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. (more…)

  • The MMA Minute – UFC Fight Night 22 Aftermath

We got a pretty decent night of fights for a fight night. My picks started out pretty strong and then hit a road bump.

    Quick Hits

    • Lightweight bout: England Ross Pearson vs. United States Cole MillerMiller defeated Pearson via submission (rear naked choke) at 1:49 of round 2.

Miller came in with a nice flurry of knees and punches and rocked Pearson, dropping him to the ground. He pounced and sunk in the rear naked choke to finish the fierce Brit in nice fashion and setting himself up nicely in the Lightweight division.

    • Lightweight bout: United States Jim Miller vs. Brazil Gleison Tibau Miller defeated Tibau via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

I wasn’t sure Miller put enough together to take this decision. Tibau had a couple of takedowns in the 2nd, so when I heard the vote tallies, I thought maybe he’d stole the fight with that round, but Miller was definitely the more aggressive striker for the entire match, and shot himself into title contention in the stacked Lightweight division.

This was only the 2nd UFC fight for the Brazilian Oliveira, but he looked good. After getting a pretty strong shot to the no-no spot, he came out and finished the fight in quick fashion, jumping on Escudero’s back as he stood up and finished with a standing rear naked choke. At only 20 years old, this kid will be fun to watch for a long, long time.

Palhares is a very dangerous heel hook fighter. He almost got Marquardt in one of those hooks, but Marquardt pulled out and stood up. For whatever reason, Palhares stopped and pointed at Marquardt’s ankle and looked at the ref. Marquardt jumped on the opportunity and pounded out the TKO.

Just the small speedbump in the Escudero fight, otherwise a solid night of fights going 3-1, now I gotta get back to watching the premier of Ultimate Fighter.

  • iOS 4.2 Beta Drops

Apple has made a beta of iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch available to developers for download.

While I was downloading iOS 4.2 for iPad, I noticed this advisement:

iOS SDK 4.2 beta requires Mac OS X v10.6.5 pre-release to test printing from your app.

So it looks like you’ll need a Mac connected to a printer in order to print wirelessly from an iDevice, not quite the network printer discovery I was hoping for. This also raises the question of  whether or not Apple will be releasing a Windows client for sharing printers as well? Technically the framework is already there, since Bonjour has been available for Windows users for awhile now.

I have yet to install 10.6.5 to try this out, but my spare MacBook Pro looks like a prime candidate for the pre-release software treatment.

  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: Cop Out

Cop Out is a homage to all the buddy cop movies out there. Homage, which Tracy Morgan’s character points out early in the movie, is a french word for “You’d better let me do this!” He was referring to interrogating a witness, during which he proceeded to poorly imitate a number of cop movies.

This is a good example of what this movie ultimately achieves. Great dialogue followed by a scene that just missed the mark. If the entire movie could have been Willis and Morgan driving around arguing, it probably would have been better. We’ll hit the specifics and some plot details after the break. (more…)

  • Android Tablet Fever: Should You Catch It?

Most of the Android buzz over the last month or so has been related to tablet devices. Whether it’s the Dell Streak, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, or the myriad of other announced devices, tablets are all the talk right now. The problem is that right now, it’s just talk. Only a very small number of devices have been made available in the US at this point, and other than the Dell Streak, they’re made by unknown companies that are putting out poor quality devices.

Over the next couple months, the tablet market will take off with new devices. Samsung is going to be launching the Galaxy Tab, a 7-inch tablet that looks like a small iPad. Archos has announced four new devices ranging from 4-inches up to 10-inches. HP, Toshiba, and ViewSonic are building Android tablets as well.

Should you jump on the emerging bandwagon and run out to get an Android tablet?  Read on to find out. (more…)
