Some of week 1 was pretty surprising to me. Some was same old same old. Indianapolis started out the season as impressively as they ended last season. Green Bay and Houston turned some heads. Here’s a look at the fantasy leaders of week 1:
Just about anyone that played Sunday night
The NYG/DAL game was a shootout. Eli, Romo, TO, and Plaxico all came up huge and won alot of fantasy owners their games singlehandedly.
Brady and Moss
Last year, Tom Brady had jack squat in his receiving corps, and was one of the best QBs in the league. They went out and picked up a handful of playmakers and now he’s become the leader of one of the leagues most potent offenses. Randy Moss is a monster, he caught all 9 passes that came his way. He should have a huge season this year.
The new kids on the block
It looks like Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson are for real. AP took advantage of Chester Taylor getting injured and racked up over 100 rushing yards and added on a dazzling 60 yard TD reception to his grand total. Calvin Johnson also broke the 100 yard mark receiving and caught a TD as well. Both of these rookies should be very solid all year long, and for many years to come.
Where were they?
On the other hand, there were a handful of stars that simply never got off the ground in week 1. Stephen Jackson was very limited against the Panthers. Drew Brees didn’t break 200 yards, didn’t throw a TD, and had 2 INTs, and Reggie Bush was held in check all game. Donovan McNabb was pretty limited in his game against Green Bay too. Don’t expect this to become a trend for any of these guys, but it’s still something to note.
Breaking News
JaMarcus Russell finally signed a contract with the Raiders, I doubt he’ll make much impact this year, but it’s good that they finally got him inked. Also, the Browns just traded their starting QB Charlie Frye to the Seahawks, this may or may not be a sign that the Brady Quinn era could start quite a bit sooner rather than later. Both of these situations are something to keep an eye on.
Some other news, which in my opinion is the most important of all of these stories, is that Buffalo Bills TE Kevin Everett looks to be recovering from his terrible injury. He took a nasty hit with his head ducked on a kick return and fell to the ground motionless. Yesterday his doctors said it was very unlikely that he would ever walk again, but today Everett was able to move his arms and legs. Usually these are the first signs of a chance of recovery. So hopefully he will be able to live out the rest of his life with as close to a normal life as possible. It’s a tough reminder that all of these guys are a hit away from being completely debilitated, but it’s great that he looks to be on a track to recovery.
