In previous episodes we’ve seen how our intrepid (Apple) customer service reps have battled malfunctioning iPod Nanos and Macbook Pros, overcoming obstacles to please their ever needy customers (Aaron and I). In this installment we’ll face them with a new problem. What happens when you take the touch out of an iPod Touch? Find out after the jump.
It all started about a few days ago when I noticed Pool had been updated on Installer. On Aaron’s recommendation I quickly downloaded it and tried it out. 2 player support, human vs AI battles.. it was like they read my review! Unfortunately, I was having trouble aiming some of my shots. Not all, but a certain part of the pool table wouldn’t react to my gentle strokes suggesting that the cue point in this direction.
The next day I filled up my car with gas and while I was entering the numbers into MPG I noticed that I couldn’t type the ‘7’ on the pop-up keypad (or the ‘U’ as it turned out). Turns out there is a dead spot on my touch screen. I can press hard, press lightly, make rude gestures, and it won’t respond to anything. As far as I can tell there’s only one spot where this is happening, and I honestly don’t know what caused it. I’ve gotten a couple scratches on the supposedly scratch resistant screen, but none of them were near this area. I carry my Touch in my pocket quite a bit while I’m working (mostly while I’m driving), but I’ve never fallen or had anything hit my pocket while I was carrying it. It’s a mystery.
Monday I called the Applecare hotline (1-800-275-2273 if you’re interested) and talked to a dude with a hispanic accent. He was pretty cool; he hadn’t run into my problem before, but promptly took my name and address and told me he’d send a box so I could ship my iPod back to Apple for repairs. The next day DHL dropped off a box, and Wednesday I restored it to factory settings and mailed it. The shipping label on the front of the box said the “recommended” return date was to be 5/12/08. The Applecare guy said 7-9 days. I’m going to cross my fingers and hope he was right. I’m already going through withdrawals. Working without podcasts to listen to?! Insanity!
I’m personally hoping I get a new iPod out of the deal. If I do that would be two free iPods in the past two months, which would be awesome. As a consequence of sending it in for repair I obviously won’t be posting any reviews until it gets back. A fact which I’m sure crushes our vast readership. Hang tight folks, I’ll post an update when I get it back.
