Welcome to the first edition of Saturday’s Shenanigans, another series I hope to bring you on a regular basis. I’ll just bring you some quick takes on some of the recent news from the entertainment world.
I’m sure most of you know that Spider-Man is heading for a reboot and we now have our new Peter Parker: Andrew Garfield. Yeah, I’ve never heard of him either. On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.” Yeah, let’s hope so, otherwise you won’t have a chance to screw up the 3rd movie like the old group of guys did.
It looks like we’ve come full circle and Peter Jackson is now slated to direct The Hobbit, which will be split into two films. He was initially planning to only work in an ‘overseer’ role, but really, it just makes more sense for him to do this thing on his own. This movie is still a very long way from making it to your local theater, but in my opinion, this is a big step in the right direction.
Steve Carell plans on leaving The Office after the upcoming 7th season. The Office used to be my favorite show on television, but it’s really been lacking over the course of the last year or two. It’s time for them to call it a day. I’ll hold out hope that they can get the show turned around with him and then continue without him, but I don’t see any way of them making the show work without Michael Scott. It still wouldn’t surprise me if they tried. If this is, in fact, the end, it will be sad not seeing Pam, Jim, and Dwight up to their regular antics along with the rest of this outstanding cast.
After 25 years on the air, Larry King is “hanging up his suspenders” and retiring to have “more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games.” OK, Larry King is older than God, he shouldn’t have little league games to go to unless it’s his grandkids, or maybe even great-grandkids… that’s just creepy.
Futurama debuted last week to strong ratings with 2 excellent episodes, and followed that up with another strong episode this past Thursday that really laid into the iphone phenomenon. Best line of the episide:
“Is there an app for kissing my shiny metal ass?” – Bender
“Several!” – Random stranger waiting to buy an “EyePhone”
“Oooo.” – Bender
TV Squad is previewing the upcoming fall and mid-season pilots and they picked $#*! My Dad Says as their starting point. The show is based on a hilarious Twitter feed written by Justin Halpern. If you’re offended by strong language, I don’t recommend you follow that link. As I said before, the twitter feed is hilarious, but I don’t see how this show is going to work. I’ll still check it out.
From the new to the ‘not as new’, Modern Family has been picked up for syndication on USA Network. In case you didn’t watch it, Modern Family was easily my favorite new show from last season, so I’m glad to see it get syndication so quickly. I highly recommend you check it out if you get a chance.
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the original Back to the Future debut in theaters, which makes for a perfect time to announce that the Back to the Future trilogy is scheduled to come out on Blu-ray this October.
And finally, to end Saturday’s Shenanigans I’m going to pick a movie trailer for an upcoming movie I’m looking forward to. I figured I might as well start with a bang, so this week I bring you The Expendables.
