  • The MMA Minute – WEC 50 Aftermath

Hey kids, sorry for the delay on posting these. I haven’t actually been able to watch these fights yet, it’s been a crazy week and I just didn’t have the time. But the show must go on! So, rather than breaking down the fights on my own, I’ll point you to Sherdog’s outstanding coverage, and thank you for stopping by! Here’s the results along with how I fared on the night.

    Main card

    • Bantamweight bout: United States Scott Jorgensen vs. England Brad Pickett – Jorgensen defeated Pickett via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
    • Featherweight bout: United States Cub Swanson vs. United States Chad Mendes – Mendes defeated Swanson via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
    • Lightweight bout: United States Shane Roller vs. United States Anthony Pettis – Pettis defeated Roller via submission (triangle choke) at 4:51 of round 3.

The Palaszewski/Micklewright fight was added late, I didn’t make a pick for that fight. I went 2-2 on the rest of the card, picking Jorgenson over Pickett and siding with Cruz to retain the championship. For an admitted non-expert on all things WEC… not to shabby!

  • Top 10: People To Follow On Twitter, And Why

I’ve had a number of responses when I told people I use Twitter:

    • What, why do you do that?
    • You hardly ever post on there, why bother?
    • What’s Twitter?
    • How do you know who to follow?

While it’s true that I’m not the most active of all twitter-ers (twits? tweeters? tweeties?) as far as posting goes, I use Twitter like many other people, to stay connected to people and things I find interesting. Twitter has become one of the fastest and best ways to stay in touch with any sort of news you deem to be important. If you don’t know who to follow, I’ve made some lists of the people that I follow, feel free to click here and check them out if you’d like. But if you’d just like a few pointers on who to follow, click through and I’ll give you my Top 10, and why I follow them. (more…)

  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: The Ten

I remember hearing about The Ten when it came out in 2007, and I was interested in it purely based on all the names in it, but I withheld some of my enthusiasm as the entire movie is basically comprised of making fun of the Ten Commandments. I really like Paul Rudd, even in the movies I disliked, I typically enjoyed the scenes he was in. You might say I have a ‘movie crush’ on him, sometimes I’ll watch a movie only because he’s in it. I’m looking at you Wet Hot American Summer, although to be fair, I also watched that one because Elizabeth Banks is in it. I’ve also got a ‘movie crush’ on her and watch some of her movies simply because she was in them. Hmm… ‘movie crushes’, sounds like a possible upcoming post!

Alright, time to find my way back from that rabbit trail… so my wife had a girls night, and I stumbled across Cinematicals Free Flick of the Day and it featured The Ten. So I headed over and found it on Hulu, put it on the big screen (connected to my Media PC custom made by Nelsen Technologies) and found out what this movie was about.

  • The MMA Minute – WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez 2

Ahh, the joys of World Extreme Cagefighting, or the WEC as regular people call it. It’s the sister organization of the UFC, focusing on the smaller weight divisions, Lightweight (155 lbs), Featherweight (145 lbs), and Bantamweight (135 lbs). It’s so much fun watching these fights because these guys literally throw each other all over the place. Tomorrow night they hold their 50th event which will air on Versus the biggest (and only) draw being the Bantamweight title fight. This was supposed to be the debut of WEC poster boy Urijah Faber at his new weight class, but he had to pull out recently due to a knee injury. I have to confess, again, I haven’t watched quite as much WEC as I have other organizations, so some of these predictions are a bit off the cuff, or based on only 1 or 2 fights I’ve seen, you’ve been warned.

    Main card

Before my picks, I’d like to do a quick review. Over the course of the last two months I’ve gone 2-2 in Strikeforce, 4-5 in UFC, and these are my first picks of a WEC card. 6-7? Those are very pedestrian numbers. Take out possibly the biggest upset in MMA history and a card littered with picks from a rooting interest instead of purely picks by the book and those numbers would be a bit better, but that’s just a hollow excuse, I promise to do better. So here’s your picks. I like Cruz to keep his belt, Roller over Pettis, Swanson over Mendes, and Jorgensen over Pickett. Keep your fingers crossed boys and girls.

  • 2010 NFL Quick Picks: AFC Edition

So far in our football series leading up to the season, we’ve discussed Phil Steele’s Top 25 college football teams, and I shared some quick fantasy football picks with you last week. This week we’ll cover the AFC, some quick blurbs about each team’s offseason and how I think the season might shake out.

I referenced Foxsports.com for all of the free agent signings (accurate as of July 4), Backseatfan.com for all the trades (accurate as of June 19), and fftoolbox.com for the draft picks. I did my best to keep all the meaningful additions up to date as they happened, please forgive me if I missed some for your team. My team ratings after the jump. (more…)
