2008 Summer Movie Releases (POWs, BIFFs, and WHAMM-Os not included) Part 3

Author: Dave Sack - 6:55 pm

    17 Apr

After posting the links to all those trailers, it’s blatantly obvious that Warner Bros. and Universal don’t spend NEARLY the time marketing their movies that everyone else does. Either that or they just suck at it, or maybe they don’t care. Whatever the case, be sure to go check out my reviews on the May and June releases, and then come back and we’ll jump into July.

You ready? Join me after the jump

Quick, what does Bo Pelini, Kevin Garnett, Matt Serra, the NFL draft, and the NHL playoffs all have in common? They are all topics in my latest Quick Hits! (OK, so it’s my first Quick Hits, not latest… p’sh!) See what I have to say about all of them after the jump.

The month of June has a couple movies that pique my interest a bit more than May could offer. For my thoughts on May’s movie releases, see my first post.

June starts out with a couple of very iffy movies. Kung Fu Panda and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. Kung Fu Panda (June 6th) is Dreamworks’ latest offering and features the vocal talents of Jack Black and a slew of others. I’m sure it will end up being a great family movie, but I’ll save my money and get it with my Movie Pass when it comes out for rent. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (also June 6th) is, from what I can tell, probably the worst name for a movie in the history of movie names. Zohan is played by Adam Sandler and apparently is supposed to be a Mossad agent that fakes his death so he can re-emerge in New York City as a hair stylist. Yeah… sounds like another renter… if that…

The rest of the summer gets better though, so follow me and you can see what I have to say about them after the jump.

How’s that for a title, eh?! Before I get into all of my movie reviewing madness, I want to let you know that I will be including a link to the Apple Trailers site for all of the reviewed movies at the end of the article. Everyone else here seems to include something related to Apple in everything they post, I figured I should too. Now that I’ve got that covered, you may now continue.

It’s approaching the summer movie “season” and I know that I’ve got a couple I’m looking forward to. On the other hand, there are a few that I couldn’t care less about. The Dark Knight (release date July 18th) is without a doubt the movie that I’m most excited about. I always grew up a fan of Batman, but I grew up watching the 1960’s version, complete with the POWs, BIFFs, and WHAMM-Os (you knew I was going to tie in that ludicrous title some how!) and a cheese factor that oozed out of nearly ever line of dialogue and ever scene.

I never really got into the Batman movies that were released mostly throughout the 90’s and because of that, I never even saw Batman Begins until it was at the local dollar theater; in spite of the fact that everyone I knew that had seen it told me it was very good. When I finally was able to see it for myself, I renewed my interest in the Batman franchise and was excited to see where Christopher Nolan took it. He maintains the dark side that made the first one so appealing, and this time the battle includes Batman’s most famous nemesis, the Joker.

Notice I said includes not featuring. Regardless, I hope to be in line on opening night. You’ll find some of my thoughts about May’s releases after the jump.

  • Goal Line Blitz

Author: Dave Sack - 10:25 am

    12 Apr

Before I begin, let me take a moment for a self indulgent plug. If you click this link and go sign up, I get free points. Go, do it now! Fred signed up for me and all he did was log in a couple time in the following two or 3 days and that’s all that I needed to get the points. Easy right? So why haven’t you done it yet?  :)

Alright, now that that’s over, I wanted to take a moment to talk about my latest football addiction, Goal Line Blitz. It’s an american fooball mmorpg. The idea is that you sign up (it’s free!) and you get 400 Flex Points. With these flex points, you can create players. QB, RB, and WR cost 300 points each, TE, FB, and Defensive players cost 200 points each, and Offensive linemen, K, and P cost 100 points each.

After using these points, you allocate skill points to create the player in the way you see fit. At the end of the creation process, you get offered a couple contracts by cpu controlled teams so that you can get into the action right off the bat. That’s a great idea, but the problem is, they got too big too fast, and all the teams have been purchased by human players, so until they expand (which they are working on as we speak) you have to keep posting on the forums in order to get a team to give you a shot, which can be kinda boring and drawn out.

    More after the jump

  • Passing thoughts…

    19 Mar

I’ve been watching alot of basketball lately, which is weird because I usually don’t leave the channel on a b-ball game unless it’s late in the NBA playoffs or if it’s a 2nd or 3rd round NCAA tourney game. It’s just that ever since the madness that was the NBA trading deadline, I’ve actually been fairly interested in the NBA. I haven’t followed the NBA since Jordan was in his prime, let alone actually looking forward to watching a game. But things seem to be changing in the NBA. The focus is less on the thugs and more on the truly talented individuals, who actually are good people for a change.

Houston just finished a 22-0 run through the middle of the season. That qualifies as the 2nd longest winning streak in NBA history, and they don’t even have an all-star player (they did for the first 14 or so wins, but then Yao went down with an injury and they just kept winning). Their roster is made of guys that play hard for the full 48 minutes every night, and always look for the open man, instead of how to get their shot on Sports Center. Boston finally found the right mix to end the streak, but it says alot for a team to put it together for 22 straight.

My thoughts on the NCAA tourney after the jump.

  • Dynasty Sleepers: RB

Before I get going, I’d like to remind you to also check out my opinions on the sleeper QBs for the coming year. Now that I’ve finished that completely selfish advertisement, on to the RBs!

Running Back is premier position in fantasy football. Very rarely will you find a successful team without at least 1 great RB, and more than likely, that team will have 2 or more top RBs. Because this is such an important position, RBs tend to get picked first and fast, and if you don’t get to them early, you might miss out all together. Here are 5 guys that should fall to at least the 4th round (which is very late by RB standards, most leagues draft RBs for the entire first round) and should help you be competitive in your league next year.

    26 Feb

I received a few friendly reminders here recently about my lack of posting, after vowing to do better this year. I’ve been rummaging through my brain trying to find something worth writing, and decided to divulge some more useless crap that I know about fantasy football.

I’m the type of fantasy gamer that thinks football should be played all year; and since they stop playing games in mid-February, I do my part to ensure that I have plenty of things to keep me going year round. I’m currently in the middle of a startup dynasty draft (yes, ANOTHER dynasty draft, that makes 6 dynasty teams that I run!!) and we are approaching the mid rounds, when teams are truly separated because of their ability to grab key players, before they become household names. Before I start listing off these no-namers, I want to admit that I got alot of this research from other guys, and then looked into these players on my own, and I encourage you to do the same. Nobody gets it right every time, but I found a few people that seem to see things close to the same way I do, so I keep coming back for more insight. I’ll list them for you at the end.

Enough with the introductions, let’s get on to the list making! This “edition” of my dynasty sleepers will focus on the QBs. I’ll catch you after the jump:

That’s pretty much all I was able to say about the Dark Knight trailer. I’m sure, unless you live under a rock, that you’ve seen this already. But if not, I felt, being the entertainment editor around these parts, it was my duty. So please, take the time to click the following link and watch the trailer for what is, by far, the movie I’m most looking forward to in 2008.

  • New Year… new things… deal with it!!

Probably fairly evident that I didn’t spend much time thinking about that title, but… life goes on.

Alright, perhaps nobody reads this blog anymore, since we barely posted over the last 3 months or so, but I vow to do my best to remedy that problem, as Fred recently covered. I’m going to try to post SOMETHING every week. I put too much stock in coming up with something worth posting, which, after reading a couple other blogs, I realized that isn’t entirely necessary!

I’ve been spending alot of time watching football lately. Some of these bowl games have been very intriguing, even the blowouts have had something that grabbed my interest (in the BCS games anyway). The NFL regular season is over and the playoffs start in a couple days, and the coaching carousel has swung into full effect. I’m sure I have some thoughts or opinions somewhere in those statements, but it seems to be escaping me at this moment. I’ll be sure to put my thoughts together just a bit before I start writing next time, but, just so you know… that time WILL come. Have a great 2008.
