  • Saturday Shenanigans: Recent Entertainment News

    Time for your weekly dose of shenanigans. To start out, we’ll cover what is easily the biggest and coolest news that came out recently. Universal is planning an unprecedented feature/network TV adaption of the acclaimed Stephen King series The Dark Tower. I haven’t read this series, but my good friend Bob Sacamano told me that it’s pretty good. Hopefully they do it justice and it turns out as well as The Walking Dead looks.

    Geek Tyrant links to an interesting interview with Marc Guggenheim at Newsarama.com. Guggenheim is one of the 3 screenwriters recently hired to pen the scripts for Green Lantern 2 and The Flash. They highlight some good stuff, but the interview itself is worth the read.

    Pixar might be looking to jump into the superhero mix (outside of the Incredibles). Digitalspy.com has a story that Pixar is considering a CGI Doctor Strange movie.

  • T.W.I.S.T. for August 29 – September 4

    College Football is underway and the NFL starts this week, so starting next week, we’ll have a football feature on Mondays to cover all the weeks football news. But for this week, we’ll keep it all right here. Here’s this week’s T.W.I.S.T.

    NFL

    College Football

    • Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, running back for Alabama, had a procedure done on his knee and will be out for the opener. If this becomes some kind of persistent injury, it will be interesting to see how it affects their offense.
    • Texas Head Coach Mack Brown has stated that if the Heisman Trophy Trust takes back Reggie Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy, he thinks they should give it to his former QB, Vince Young. Hard to disagree with him on that one.
    • Boise State thought they were getting a great deal leaving the WAC to join the Mountain West earlier this summer, but then Utah left for the Pac-10 and now BYU is leaving… to go independent!
    • The Big 10 conference has released it’s new divisions! Although they are not yet named they will be split up like this: Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Northwestern in one and Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Illinois, Purdue, and Indiana in the other.
    • QB Jeremiah Masoli has won his appeal and will now be allowed to play this season for Ole Miss after transferring (being kicked out) from Oregon. He won’t start the opener, but he’ll be their starting QB for the remainder of the season.
    • Bodog.com has released the starting odds have been released for the National Championship winners. Here’s some interesting ones: Nebraska 15/1, Iowa 20/1, Texas 14/1, OU 15/2, Bama 4/1, Ohio St 5/1, Boise 8/1. The field 25/1

    NHL

    After denying his 17 year deal, the NHL has approved a new 15 year deal for Ilya Kovalchuk to sign with the New Jersey Devils. 15 freakin’ years… that’s ridiculous.

  • Saturday Shenanigans: Recent Entertainment News

    I’m going to have to apologize about this week’s Saturday Shenanigans (and possibly the upcoming month or so), I volunteer my time as a coach for a flag football team and it just doesn’t leave me a ton of extra time. However, I don’t want these weekly posts to fall by the wayside, so the show must go on!

    With that out of the way, let’s get on to the Shenanigans.

    Google just has to have their hand in everything! The Financial Times says that Google has approached major studios about launching a global pay per view movie service by the end of 2010. If this comes to fruition, analysts speculate that YouTube will become one of the major players in the online video streaming marketplace.

    Entertainment Weekly has a video of an interview on the Emmy red carpet with Tina Fey. In this pre-Emmy clip, she reveals that she’s booked Mad Man Jon Hamm for a return appearance as Drew in her show’s much-anticipated live episode. Jon Hamm has been great in this role, so I’m excited to see how it goes live. Oh, and speaking of the Emmy’s, here’s the list of winners.

  • Entry Level Geek: ComicBookMovie.com

    I know we just had an Entry Level Geek a week ago, but I was catching up on ComicBookMovie.com, and there’s been all sorts of superhero news coming up lately, so another edition was necessary. Here’s the best of what they’ve recently posted.

    We talked last week about a tweet by Deadpool creator Rob Liefield:

    Warner Bros. just trying to protect their investment. They don’t want Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool AND Green Lantern. Interesting 2 watch

    Well it sounds like whatever hurdles they were encountering have been cleared. He recently posed this to his twitter account:

  • T.W.I.S.T. for August 22-28

    You might call this the calm before the storm. This is the final weekend without actual real life, meaningful football on television for the rest of the year. The baseball season is winding down… there’s just not much out there.

    NFL

    The owners voted this week to jump the regular season up to 18 games, and to reduce the pre-season to only 2 games. I don’t really see how this works, it takes the coaches at least 3 games to really see what they have in the pre-season, this change could really cost some borderline players possible careers in the NFL. Looks like it’s going to happen though, so we’ll see how it goes.

    MLB

    Stephen Strasberg, pretty much the only interesting storyline over the course of the last month, has an injured elbow and has to go under the knife. Sad to see such a talented young kid have to deal with injury, but such is the life.

    NCAA Football

    Missouri RB Derrick Washington has been suspended indefinitely by the team. Apparently he’d been accused of assault, if this thing lasts very long into the season, Nebraska’s road to the Big 12 North title just got a lot easier.

    MMA

    Frankie Edgar showed the world that his first match with BJ Penn wasn’t a fluke and completely dominated Penn for 5 rounds. Randy Couture also showed boxing alone won’t translate into wins in the octagon as he polished off James Toney.
