2008 Summer Movie Releases (POWs, BIFFs, and WHAMM-Os not included) Part 3

After posting the links to all those trailers, it’s blatantly obvious that Warner Bros. and Universal don’t spend NEARLY the time marketing their movies that everyone else does. Either that or they just suck at it, or maybe they don’t care. Whatever the case, be sure to go check out my reviews on the May and June releases, and then come back and we’ll jump into July.

Every weekend in July offers something that I’m at least mildly interested in seeing in theaters. It all starts out July 2nd, right before the 4th with the latest Will Smith movie, Hancock. Seeing as how Will Smith still ranks in at #1 on my wife’s top 5 list, I’m sure we’ll be there, tickets in hand on opening day. But the Fresh Prince has a history of making big money at the box office, particularly around holidays, so I fully expect this movie to be very entertaining. IMDB explains the plot outline like so:

A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who’s trying to repair his image.

Sounds like there’s definitely some potential for humor in this one, and from what I’ve seen so far, and judging Smith’s history, I’m sure this will be a fun movie.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army comes out July 11th and I’m interested in how this one does. The first Hellboy didn’t do wonderfully, or get very good reviews, but I didn’t think it was all that bad, and I think it did well enough as a rental to bring this sequel along. I may or may not make it to the theaters for this one, but I think it should at the very least be worth renting.

July 18th of course is the arrival of the movie I’m most anticipating, The Dark Knight. I think this movie will set box office records. It was one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer before the unfortunate passing of Heath Ledger, and I think all the people that will be driven to the theaters to see his last completed work will make this one nearly a lock to be a record setter. Count me in!

This brings us to the end of an extraordinary month, and with 2 big releases, July 25th should not disappoint. Step Brothers is the newest Will Ferrell comedy and he re-teams with John C. Reilly (they were the nucleus known as ‘Shake and Bake’ in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby). Ferrell and Reilly play two spoiled guys who become competitive stepbrothers after their single parents get hitched.Personally, I love almost everything Will Ferrell has been in, and when he’s on screen with someone that knows how to work off of him, it’s practically priceless. I hope this one lives up to it’s billing!

The X-Files 2 also hits theaters on the 25th. Technically, this movie doesn’t have an official name yet, and they are doing everything possible to keep the plot under wraps. Again, this was a series I never really got into when I was younger, but I’m intrigued by this movie, and I’m very interested in what they bring to the table. This is an interesting article that might tell a bit about the movie, but really, I don’t know anything about it. I’m looking forward to it!

July looks like a busy month, I guess I better start saving up for all those movie tickets.
