Welcome to TWIST! The first of, hopefully, many weekly updates regarding the wide world of sports. You read that right:
tomfoolery
Main Entry: tom·fool·ery
1. Foolish behavior.
2. Something trivial or foolish; utter nonsense; rubbish
You’ve come to a blog called Hijinks Inc, you can’t really be surprised that I worked a word like tomfoolery into the title of a recurring post. Besides, if you know me at all, you know that this fits me, and most of the stuff I come up with, quite well. Alright, now that I’ve got the introductions out of the way…
This was a pretty crazy week in the wide world of sports. One of the most dominant athletes in any sport lost for the ‘first’ time, the longest tennis match in the history of the universe was played and the favorites were knocked out of both the World Cup and the College World Series. Here’s some quick hits:
MMA
- Fabricio Werdum scores one of the biggest upsets in MMA history by submitting Fedor Emelianenko in the 1st round at Strikeforce 26. Why did I call it his ‘first’ loss? You can read why along with my thoughts on the main card here.
- Jamie Varner and Kamal Shalorus fought to a draw at WEC 49.
NBA
- John Wall was the #1 pick of the NBA draft as expected.
- Chicago traded G Kirk Hinrich and the the 17th pick in the draft to Washington. This doesn’t mean anything right now, but it frees up enough cap space for the Bulls that they can now offer maximum money to 2 big free agents, so after July 1 when those guys can start signing, then this might be a really big deal.
World Cup
- After France finished their complete meltdown, Italy also fell after a great rally at the end. This means that the two teams that played in the championship game in the last World Cup are both eliminated in the first round.
- The United States team won its first World Cup match in eight years and finished atop its first-round group for the first time since the original World Cup in 1930. Of course, they turned around and lost to Ghana in the first round.
College Baseball
- South Carolina knocked top seeded Arizona State out of the CWS along with Oklahoma and Clemson; Florida, Florida State, and TCU also fell. South Carolina will face UCLA in the championship series this week.
Tennis
- Apparently John Isner and Nicolas Mahut are exactly the same level of talent when it comes to tennis because they just played a game over the course of 3 separate days, lasting more than 11 hours in total. Of course, after this grueling match in the opening round, Isner practically rolled over and played dead in the next round and fell to Thiemo de Bakker.
Nebraska Football
- C’mon, I gotta mention the local religion, err, I mean football team. Nebraska picked up a couple commits from two recruits this week, one being the #3 rated dual-threat QB in the nation (after they already grabbed the #6 rated dual-threat QB a few months ago, that’s the quick way to solve a QB problem), the other being the #1 ranked player in the state of Nebraska.
