  • What Apps Should I Download For My iPhone?

Lifehacker released their ‘Lifehacker Pack for iPhone’ this week, so I figured in honor of their list, we’d go ahead and compile a nice group of lists recommending you the best apps around. Whether your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is brand new, or maybe you just got a brand spanking new iTunes gift card and are itching to spend it on something, we could all use a good list to point us in the right direction from time to time. As you might imagine, there’s alot of crossover between these lists, so pick your favorite and go to town!

And of course, don’t forget to check out our growing list of reviews for iPhone apps, iPhone games, and iPad games. And as always, if you’d like us to review a game or app for you, just let us know in the comments. You still have a few days left to get yourself entered into our contest to win a $25 iTunes gift card!

  • T.W.I.S.T. for Aug 8-14

It’s getting close to football season, we’ve got pre-season games… but nothing of any consequence yet. So we’ll make do with what we have:

    Football

    • I was just like every other football fan last year, and sorta dismissed the UFL as a passing fad, nothing but the next in a long line of failed leagues. But, they brought a team right down the road in Omaha, so I suddenly care about this young league! I’ve been really impressed with how the Nighthawks (that’s the team name, in case you couldn’t put the two together) have gone about building their team. The most recent signing is QB Jeff Garcia. At this point with the talent they’ve accumulated, I’d be fairly surprised if Omaha doesn’t manage to win the league championship in their initial season.
    • In the event that the NFL heads into a lockout next season, new Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall has expressed interest in playing the NBA… and he seems serious about it.

    NBA

The New Jersey Nets were purchased by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, and he’s been determined to give his team a makeover from top to bottom. The team has applied to the NBA for a name change, which usually takes about 2 years. Coincidentally, that would coordinate nicely with the Nets’ scheduled 2012 move into a new arena in Brooklyn.

That’s about all I could find for you guys this week, just not a lot of interesting stuff going on at the moment, I just can’t bring myself to break down the NFL pre-season games. Real meaningful football, get here faster please!!

  • Axon Haptic Tablet Available for Pre-Order

For those that are daring enough to jump off the deep end, you can now pre-order the rumored Axon Haptic tablet (not to be confused with Axiotron’s Modbook) for a cool $750 . The capacitive-touch Hackintosh tablet boasts compatibility with Windows 7 as well as all Darwin-based OS platforms, including Mac OS, though on Axon’s website they state that Apple’s EULA specifically prohibits installation on any non-Apple hardware, though that’s certainly not going to stop anyone… after all, they call it a Hackintosh for a reason.

Some might believe the 1.6Ghz Atom N270 leaves a little to be desired, though it still has fairly decent hardware for a tablet. Specs include a 10.1″ LED backlit screen, 320GB HD, 2GB RAM, a removable battery, 3x USB ports, ethernet, card reader, VGA port, WiFi and for additional $70 you can add a Verizon 3G SIM card, and yet another $70 will get you Bluetooth GPS.

It’s up in the air at this point how well full-fledged operating systems will behave with the capacitive touchscreen, though I think it’s definitely a step in the right direction to bring more devices to the market as alternatives to the iPad that allow something more than a mobile OS. If nothing else, it might cause Apple to consider the possibility of competing with them, but then again, does anything anyone does really ever affect what Apple does?

For full tech specs and description, visit Axon Logic’s website, but see if I’m not the only one that’s bothered by the fact that they copied Apple’s top bar right off their website for their own….

  • Saturday Shenanigans: Recent Entertainment News

Hey there, welcome to another edition of Saturday Shenanigans, let’s get started:

As we all know, all good things must come to an end. While I’m not the worlds biggest Entourage fan, I’ve enjoyed watching the series, but it’s coming to an end after next season, which will be a shortened 8th season. More than likely, we’ll get a feature film a little further down the road.

Some of the hosts of the upcoming season of SNL are being announced, one I’m excited about seeing is Jane Lynch! She’s always fun to watch and she’s set to host the October 9th show.

Blockbuster is doing everything possible to stay semi-relevant. They’ve begun to offer video games in their rent-by-mail service. I never tried GameFly, but I might give this a go. If they had the convenient streaming option that Netflix offers via Xbox 360, I would switch in a heartbeat.
