Free SIP Calling with Google Voice (sans Gizmo5)

Let me start by saying this tutorial does not use Gizmo5, since they no longer are accepting signups (gee, thanks Google) I was looking for a way to make this work without using their service.Β When you’re done, this will allow you to make Β calls via your computer, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch (2nd gen and newer) to any number using your Google Voice number, all for free.

For starters you’ll need a Google Voice number, if you don’t have one, post your email address in the comments and we’ll do our best to hook you up (I have 5 invites currently available).

This tutorial is rather long and some might find it overly complicated, so consider yourself warned. What I’ve outlined here is the free way of doing things, but if you purchase iPhone software like Acrobits Softphone [$7.99] you’ll get a much better userΒ experience.

Step 1: Register for a PBXes.org account.

Step 2: On the left hand menu of PBXes.org, clickΒ Extensions. Then click SIP.

Select Extensions

  • Extension Number: 100
  • Under Display Name enter whatever you’d like
  • Enter a password
  • Confirm that Voicemail is disabled
  • Hit Submit

Your settings should look like this:

SIP Settings

Step 3: Edit your newly created extension by selecting it from the left hand menu.

  • dtmfmode: rfc2833
  • audio bypass: no

Extended SIP Settings

Hit Submit.

Step 4: Create a ring group by selecting Ring Groups from the left hand menu.

  • Group number: 1
  • Ring strategy : ringall
  • Extension list: 100
  • Ring time: 60

Ring Group Settings

Confirm these settings and then hit Submit Changes.

Step 5: Create an Inbound Route. Click Inbound Routing from the left hand menu.

  • Trunk: username-100
  • Under Set Destination mark Extension: Username <100>

Incoming Route Settings

Hit Submit.

Throughout editing the above settings you might have noticed a little red bar at the top of the page that says “You have made changes – when finished, click here to APPLY them.” Now’s the time to do just that.

Bar

That’s it for what you need to configure on PBXes.org, now you’ll need to hook your SIPΒ extensionΒ into the POTS network so you can call any phone.

Step 6:
Go to phone.ipkall.com

  • Account type: SIP
  • Area code: Any
  • SIP Phone number: username-100
  • SIP proxy: pbxes.org
  • Email address: Your email
  • Password: Your PBXes.org password

IP Kall Settings

Complete the CAPTCHA and hit Submit. Now check your email for your phone number.

Now this is where things get interesting, you’ll need to configure a softphone before adding your new number to Google Voice.

iPhone/iPad/iPod touch Users:
Download Media5-fone [free]. After installing, go to Settings.app, scroll down and tap Media5-fone.

Note: The free version limits you to 1 minute calls so it really is only useful for testing your settings. This is the only free SIP app I was able to get to work with my PBXes.org account and it also allows you to verify your Google Voice number, which is something a lot of apps have problems with. Once you have your Google Voice number verified, consider purchasing Acrobits Softphone for $7.99, which isΒ virtuallyΒ identical to Media5-fone for setting up but it works quite a bit better.

  • Server Address: pbxes.org
  • Account Name: Your PBXes Username
  • Password: Your PBXes Password
  • Display Name: Your name

Media5-fone settings

OS X Users:
Download Blink fromΒ icanblink.com (I’m going to assume you can figure out how to save a DMG, mount it and install Blink to your applications folder).

After launching Blink, select Add an Existing SIP Account.

  • Display name: Your Name
  • SIP Address: username-100@pbxes.org
  • Password: Your PBXes.org Password

Blink Settings

Connecting Google Voice to your SIP number.
Login to your Google Voice account, click Settings and then Add another phone.

  • Name: SIP
  • Number: Your IPKall Number
  • Phone type: Work

Google Voice Settings

It will then ask you to verify your phone. To do so, open up Media5-fone then hit Connect on the verification screen.

Google Voice Verify Screen

Answer the call, tap Speaker, then tap Keypad and enter your verification number.

3 easy steps

There you have it, you can place calls from Google Voice and have it ring your softphone. Consider combining this with Backgrounder and GV Mobile for jailbroken iPhone’s/iPads/iPod Touches and you have a pretty killer combo.

I have been trying to get this working over an app on the iphone called nimbuzz, but I can’t seem to get the setting to work. Do you know a way to do it?

    1. mvndaai Avatar
      mvndaai

I should have given more details when I use it nimbuzz I go to add other SIP and I give the user name and password and domain of pbxes.org after the 6 steps. When this is done it lets me receive calls, but not dial out. I tried the media5-fone which also accepted the call, but it did not let me activate the gv account because the dial pad wouldn’t work within the call. Neither let me make outgoing calls.

      1. mvndaai Avatar
        mvndaai

I forgot for a moment that you aren’t supposed to make outgoing calls through anything else, that google voice does it for you. My question is do you know of any app for the iphone that will push an incoming call?

        1. Aaron Nelsen Avatar
          Aaron Nelsen

Acrobits Softphone is supposed to push notifications of incoming calls to you, but it doesn’t do so consistently for me.

Your best bet is to jailbreak the phone and run your VoIP/SIP app in the background with Backgrounder.

    Hello,

This tutorial is great. I have been looking for ways to use google voice with a SIP softphone. I could set-up everything based on this tutorial (on my Windows system), but the problem I am facing is the verification of the google voice code. I have tried with few SIP clients, but none of them is able to enter the verification code.

Could anyone help me with the problem?

    Thanks,

What clients have you tried? Depending on the client there might be some DTMF settings you could play with.

        Hello Aaron,

So far I have tried with X-Lite, Mizu, QuteCom and 3CXPhone.

I am able to receive the call from GV, but none of them is able to recognize the code entries.

My preference is to use X-Lite as my SIP client. I am able to see the configuration of DTMF and RFC2833 in X-Lite (both are set to 1 now), but I am going to play with various combinations. I have just seen another blog where it is suggested that DTMF should be 1 and RFC2833 should be 0.

Do you have a similar set-up working? Which client do you use?

        Thanks,
        –John

        1. Aaron Nelsen Avatar
          Aaron Nelsen

Despite what some people say, I’ve been unable to get X-Lite to recognize the tones even after editing the DTMF settings.

I use Blink, but that’s a Mac only client. Though they are working on a Windows client.

I would suggest using a site like http://www.dialabc.com/sound/generate/ to generate a sound file of the verification number and playing that back.

This is a great article. I’ve been furious that google shutdown gizmo5 signups… It seems like people are having good experiences with it.

I’m using an itouch 3rd gen and I’m thinking about going with acrobits. I’m hoping to figure out a way to be in a locked-like, low-power state while still getting push notifications, though I expect to be battling this issue for a while…

Heard anything about wireless n hacks yet? Apple’s dragging the anchor on it, it seems like someone out there ought to be able to make it happen.

Oh yeah, any chance you’ve got a GV invite left?

    1. Aaron Nelsen Avatar
      Aaron Nelsen

Thanks! Gizmo5 would’ve made this whole process a lot easier, but oh well.

You can use the “Keep iPhone Awake” mode that’s included with Acrobits Softphone, which will dim the screen, but not let the device go into standby. Obviously this isn’t a very elegant solution and will still murder your battery life. I prefer using it with Backgrounder on a jailbroken device, this will enable you to keep the app running in the background so it loads almost instantly when you accept a call from the push notification.

I have not, but I’ll certainly look into it.

I don’t, but my a friend of mine might, I will see if I can get him to send an invite your way.

Thanks so much for the tutorial– it has been really helpful.

Unfortunately I am having some trouble setting up my Blink account. Whenever I go to make a call, it says “user not found” (though the test calls work fine). Any idea what might be the issue here?

Also, Media5-fone cannot register with the server. I tried using a SIP from pbx and one from SIP2SIP and still nothing. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again for all of your help.

PS: I am abroad so that might explain the inability of Media5-fone to register with the server (I am only using wifi and not a cellular data network).

Hi, I have gizmo5 and was wondering if you knew a tutorial using gizmo5. i tried this method but unfortunately when google voice tries to verify the phone number i dont get either mediafone or the paid software to take in the incoming call. I understand that this works very similar to how gizmo did. Is there any neat solution where everything can work within 1 app instead of having to swtich from gv mobile to other app?

I’ve seen a few around the net, but I have no way of verifying that they work as I don’t have access to a Gizmo5 account. Sorry!

  17. […] How my setup works is simple(ish). IPKall provides a SIP number for my Google Voice account to call, which rings to Acrobits Softphone, so if I use GV Mobile to dial a number it then rings my iPhone via that IPKall SIP number. Along those same lines, anytime someone calls my Google Voice number the call rings through to my iPhone using Acrobits Softphone. Β You can find instructions on how to setup SIP calling in this post. […]

  18. robandjeanne Avatar
    robandjeanne

Your last post about how your setup works is great. I’m very new at this and am trying to understand what is being done before I do it. Am I right in thinking the entire process is much more involved than if one had Gizmo5?

For example I don’t recall anyone setting up their own PBX before. Ipcall, Icanblink all seem like new approaches, and it seems incredible that Media5-fone is the best softphone with all the others out there. I guess your identifying a PBX setting up a SIP account and getting a phone number, but why and do any of these programs need to be running on your PC to make a call?.

Of course, if it works it’s brilliant, but you must have paid your dues trying simpler approaches. For example I thought I read that Sipgate could replace Gizmo5, but maybe you have to pay after initial minutes run out. Finally is the use of icanblink only to allow Mac users to use this system, or is this saying only Mac users can use this on their PCs (since icanblink is only for Macs).

Thanks again for the detailed tutorial. My inexperience has me confused over a couple points which I hope you can clear up. When signing up for PBXes it seems I established an account with a user name and pw, then during the add SIP extension I created a Display name and a totally different pw (since the Display name was different I assumed the pw should be different from the account pw). However going to PBXes.org I see I can sign in with my account name and pw so they seem to be working, therefore defining exactly what my PBXes user name and pw is. Given this, I’m not sure what my display name and pw are used for (other than for OS X users). Also in step 3 of PBXes I saw a line in my set up saying dial SIP/username-100, and I notice you actually use username-100 as the account name in media 5-fone.. If I try to sign into PBXes as username-100 it doesn’t work. This seems to say I should use only “username” as the account name in media 5-fone.

This also had me confused signing up to ipKall, because I wasn’t sure which PBXes pw was required (account or display/SIP ). Since my regular email pw was the same as my PBXes account pw that’s what I used, and I received the phone number right away.

As a final consideration, you point out that Acrobits is the same set up as media 5 -fone. Does Acrobits have better sound quality or make a more reliable connection? I wonder if there is a way to have Acrobits push even when there is a thumbtack mic plugged in (I’m jailbroken so could run Acrobits in background to allow setting it up for speaker operation). Can we use the same setup on our PCs? What softphone have you used in PC mode?

This is a brilliant guide; thanks for putting it together. However, I had to set my DTMF setting with pbxes.com to “info” instead of “rfc2833”. When it was on “rfc2833”, it simply would not pass any DTMF signals through, which meant I couldn’t verify my IPKall number with Google Voice.

I am using X-Lite as my SIP client, so that might have something to do with it. Hope this helps someone else.

The 2nd and more important question is that I can only receive calls with this solution i get an error when trying to make calls through the SIP client. Is this meant to be an inbound only solution?

IPkall numbers get handed out and then abandoned on a regular basis. I got the same warning message from GV, but the warning included a “reclaim this number” link which allowed me to add it.
However, I also ran into the problem mentioned by several other posters: the 2-digit DTMF verification code entered using the Media5-fone on my iPod Touch (4th gen, with camera) was not recognized by GV, so I have not been able to verify the number.

I’m not sure that there are other services like IPKall. In fact, I have no idea why IPKall exists or what there revenue model could possibly be.! I have a physical PBX machine, so I don’t use PBXes.org. I don’t think you need it. It’s just one option for a SIP client. I don’t know anything about Blink so I didn’t comment. And what are you using for your SIP trunk?

palibaacsi, looks like no more replies are allowed. Well I don’t have a PBX or SIP trunk or anything just the Blink client on my PC. I picked up a Cisco 7940 IP phone and was trying to get it setup. Since Gizmo is going away I though it would be easier to first get SIP running on the PC then use the same settings for the phone. I have a much simpler IP phone though and might have to use that since all the links to Cisco configuration programs on Voxilla are 3-4 years old and don’t work anymore.
I wonder if Aaron is even here anymore since he hasn’t posted for a year?

Freakin’ awesome guide! I can now make totally free U.S. calls on my Dell Axim X30 with Pocket PC 2003, using SJPhone and accessing GV on Opera Mini!

I’ve been using Gizmo5 & GV on my iTouch for 7 months since ditching my iPhone. April 3rd is a coming and this just solved the problem PERFECTLY.

ps. since being forced to switch i picked up GroundWire and the sound quality is even better with this set-up. Thanks a million.

Aaron, I was trying to setup Google Voice to use for VOIP instead of Gizmo5 by following your directions and it all seemed to work OK but Google Voice couldn’t verify the phone no. and when I called it directly I got a busy signal. I suspect you left out a few steps. Wouldn’t PBXes.org also need an Outbound Route and possibly some other settings that I can’t determine? After a while I gave up on your procedure and I installed the Blink SIP client on my PC and changed the settings in Ipkall to point to Blink instead of PBXes. Now when I call the IPkall number it rings Blink and I can answer it and when I tried to verify the number with Google Voice it worked!
I don’t see why I would need to use PBXes.org at all or even Google Voice for that matter except maybe to get a local number instead of the one in Washington.
Can you clearify why PBXes.org is needed at all?
