webOS Woes: Worst mobile browser ever?

    Dear HP,

Now that you’ve dropped some serious coin on Palm, start making some changes to what could be a pretty useful OS.

For this installment, let’s talk web browser. Years ago we were lucky to even have internet on our phones and serving up plain text websites was acceptable, but we expect just a bit more out of our smart phones these days. So please step up your game.

Here’s an example of the quality browsing experience I’ve been dealing with lately.

  • Hijinks Reviews: DoodleGeddon

    Publisher: Three Sprockets, Ltd.
    Platform: iPad
    Cost: $1.99 [iTunes Link]
    Release date: September 02, 2010
    Version Reviewed: 1.0

When the iPhone first launched, a little company called Lima Sky created a monster with Doodle Jump, since then numerous companies have tried to cash in on the “Doodle craze”, very few of them offering much in the way of compelling game play when compared to Doodle Jump. Even fewer mimicking the financial success of Lima Sky.

    Enter DoodleGeddon.

DoodleGeddon boasts that it’s a “…fast paced missile command style game…”. But is it? Well, sort of. It certainly is a missile command style game, that much is obvious. But the gameplay itself is horrendously slow until about wave 12, then things get a little crazy. While I can see why they choose to ease people into the game, it’d be nice if they offered different levels of difficulty.

  • iOS 4.2 Beta Drops

Apple has made a beta of iOS 4.2 for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch available to developers for download.

While I was downloading iOS 4.2 for iPad, I noticed this advisement:

iOS SDK 4.2 beta requires Mac OS X v10.6.5 pre-release to test printing from your app.

So it looks like you’ll need a Mac connected to a printer in order to print wirelessly from an iDevice, not quite the network printer discovery I was hoping for. This also raises the question of  whether or not Apple will be releasing a Windows client for sharing printers as well? Technically the framework is already there, since Bonjour has been available for Windows users for awhile now.

I have yet to install 10.6.5 to try this out, but my spare MacBook Pro looks like a prime candidate for the pre-release software treatment.

  • Boxee Box pre-orders are a go

Boxee Box pre-orders are a go

It’s common knowledge that I’m a fan of Boxee as a software solution, but running a computer just for my TV is a little excessive, even for me. Enter the Boxee Box.

Awhile back Boxee teamed up with D-Link to  work on a hardware solution, it was so long ago, I’d almost forgot it was in development. But it’s finally time to pull out your wallets and pre-order at Amazon. The Boxee Box is capable of 1080p playback over a wireless or wired connection,  supports playback from network locations, SD cards, or USB attached storage. And of course various streaming services like Netflix.

The supported file formats are pretty impressive, even rocking Flash support.

    • Audio Formats: MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AIF/AIFF, AC3/AAC, OGG, FLAC, DTS, Dolby Digital/Dolby True HD
    • Video Formats: Adobe Flash 10.1, FLV/On2 VP6 (FLV/FV4/M4V), H.264 AVC (TS/AVI/MKV/MOV/M2TS/MP4), VC-1 (TS/AVI/MKV/WMV), MPEG-1 (DAT/MPG/MPEG), MPEG-2 (MPG/MPEG/VOB/TS/TP/ISO/IFO), MPEG-4 (MP4/AVI/MOV), DivX 3/4/5/6 (AVI/MKV), Xvid (AVI/MKV), WMV9 (WMV/ASF/DVR-MS)
    • Image Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF
    • Playlist Formats: M3U, PLS, WPL
    • Subtitle Formats: SRT, SUB, SSA, SMI, ASS

I’m seriously considering one to replace the 4yo MacBook Pro that’s running my media center right now.
