With the dozens of games already available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, you would think that all the obvious ideas would have been taken already. I mean, we have Tetris, Pool, Chess, Snake..pretty much every cell phone staple you could think of right? Wrong. Here’s five games that no one has ported that are just begging for their time to shine.
5. You Have To Burn The Rope. This aptly titled flash game made the rounds of gaming blogs last month, and it’s redefining of the words “straightforward gameplay” need to be seen on the iPhone.
4. Rogue (or Rogue-like anything). The old ASCII graphics won’t tax the processor too much, and the gameplay could be ‘mobilized’ with the addition of a quicksave option. The biggest obstacle is (as always) the controls. it honestly could work using the same keyboard shortcuts on the keypad, but knowing most developers that would be too simple.
3. SimCity. With the recent release of the code for public use, SimCity is begging for release on Installer. While other projects (such as openttd) have failed at providing a good control scheme, we’re confident that with liberal use of embedded menus SimCity could be a success.
2. Brain Age. This one might be a pipe dream, with the caveat that both Nintendo and Apple like money, and releasing a Brain Age game for the iPhone be essentially writing a very large check to themselves. It seems like a perfect fit for me, and I’m sure millions would agree.
1. Worms. Come on now people. I need me some invertebrate commandos with freakin’ bazookas. This is far and away on the top of my iPhone wish list. Heck, I’d pay money for it, just make it.
On a sidenote, there’s also a open source worms-ish game called Scorch available for the PC. Very low tech, but it retains the same core gameplay of the Worms franchise. If a freelance developer wanted some existing code to work with, Scorch would be the place to look.
