  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: Killers

    Tom Selleck is great in just about everything, and the man actually looks good with a mustache. Catherine O’Hara is always funny, she can steal a scene at the drop of a hat and always plays crazy and plays it well. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to pair these two as a couple was brilliant. They are one of those screen couples that are totally believable and just make sense, they’re that cool old couple that everyone loves to hang around.

    Ashton Kutcher is a good looking man and does pretty well with the funny stuff. The more physical the humor, typically the better he can carry it. Katherine Heigl is one of those really regular looking hot people (that’s how I described her to my wife). She can be funny sometimes but she isn’t really a lead. They make a semi-believable couple, good enough for a movie like this anyway.

    Ashton Kutcher can not pull off being an assassin. No way, no how, no in a million years. That’s just the beginning of what was wrong with Killers, notice how I spent the opening paragraph talking about the supporting actors. Join me after the break if you want all the nasty details. (more…)

  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: The Other Guys

    I mentioned last week in my review of The Expendables that my wife had received some free movie passes and we’d planned to use them for that movie but I ended up on a guy’s night instead, you remember that? Well, since we missed that one, we decided instead to use them on The Other Guys because we’d heard so many good reviews of the movie from friends.

    I went in with very low expectations because so many of Will Ferrell’s movies have been downright terrible lately. His movies have turned into extended versions of the commercials because all the funny parts fit into the trailer. But the movie was holding onto a high 70s rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which put it ahead of the all-time classic Anchorman, so I had to keep reminding myself to not get too excited for this one.   • Hijinks Movie Reviews: The Book Of Eli

    I remember being completely underwhelmed by The Book Of Eli when I first saw the advertisements for it. Maybe I’m just not into post-apocalyptic movies, maybe I’m tired of the ‘last man alive’ type flicks… there just wasn’t much about this movie that grabbed me and made me want to sit down to watch it. But I had a number of people tell me that it was a pretty good movie, so I sat down and gave it a try recently and came away a bit surprised.

    Here’s the release details, courtesy of Wikipedia, we’ll jump into my thoughts after the jump. The Book Of Eli was released in theaters January 15, 2010, and hit the rental shelves on Blu-Ray and DVD June 15, 2010. Beware of spoilers! (more…)

  • Hijinks Movie Reviews: The Losers

    The summer of 2010 brought us two ragtag military team movies. Movie A: “A group of Iraq War veterans looks to clear their name with the U.S. military, who suspect the four men of committing a crime for which they were framed.” and Movie B: “After being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination.”

    Movie B happened to be The Losers, Movie A was The A-Team. While I’ve heard good things about The A-Team, I haven’t seen that one yet. The Losers theatrical release date was jockeyed around a bit, but ended up being April 23, 2010, and July 20, 2010 was it’s DVD and Blu-Ray release.   • Hijinks Movie Reviews: The Expendables

    My wife received 2 pairs of free movie passes as a gift from her work awhile back, and I told him immediately after hearing about them that one of the movies we had to go watch was The Expendables. I was really excited about this movie, I mean, look at that list of names on the poster… it had to be awesome, right?

    Well, as it ended up, we didn’t use the tickets for this movie, I ended up going on a guy’s night out with my buddy Bob Sacamano because The Expendables was one of the $5 movies for the week. We got to the theater, found the seats closest to the middle of the theater, not too close, and with the requisite one seat buffer between us, we sat in expectation of all the awesomely mind blowing action we were about to see.
